Free Webinar: Legal Basics:
Social Security Overpayments

When: Tuesday, January 16, 2024
11:00 a.m.–12:15 p.m. P.T./2:00-3:15 p.m. E.T.

An overpayment of Social Security (Title II) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI, or Title XVI) benefits occurs whenever an individual receives more money for a month than the amount that should have been paid by the Social Security Administration (SSA). This training will review the options individuals have when they receive a notice of an overpayment from SSA.

Presenters will cover the steps advocates can take to ensure the accuracy of an overpayment claimed by SSA, to reduce or eliminate the amount taken by SSA, and to enforce clients’ due process rights. Participants will also learn about recent changes SSA has made to address some of the problems with the overpayment appeal and waiver processes, and how advocates can be part of the efforts to tackle these problems.

Presenters:

  • Kate Lang, Director, Federal Income Security, Justice in Aging
  • John S. Whitelaw, Advocacy Director, Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (Delaware)

Capacity for this session is limited to 3,000 participants, and all participants will have the option of accessing audio through the computer or by phone. Closed captioning will be available. Please be sure to log onto the webinar a few minutes early in order to secure your place for the live presentation on Zoom. If you would like to request ASL interpretation or have other accessibility related questions, please email ncler@acl.hhs.gov at least one week in advance.

This webinar will be recorded and available on our website shortly after the presentation. The recording and training materials will also be emailed to all registrants within a few days after the training. We are unable to offer CEU’s or other certifications. Thank you for understanding.

The webinar will take place on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. PT/2:00 p.m. ET. and will run for 75 minutes.
