Legal Challenges After a Natural Disaster: Helping Older Adults Facing the Aftermath

When: Thursday, March 19, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. PT/2:00 p.m. ET.

After a natural disaster strikes, residents of the affected area face a myriad of immediate and longer-term challenges, legal and otherwise. For service providers, it is essential to reach out to consumers, including older adults, and immediately identify their needs and connect them with assistance. Right after a disaster, older adults may face challenges avoiding contractor fraud, door-to-door sales pressure, price gouging, and scams seeking their assignment of insurance benefits. Homeowners may also struggle to access insurance payments, obtain federal or local financial assistance, and make mortgage payment arrangements.

In this Advanced Training, the presenters will explore how to recognize and respond to the consumer law needs faced by older adults post-disaster. The presenters will discuss problems and remedies presented by contractor, insurance, and door-to-door sales fraud. The webinar will address issues homeowners face in obtaining insurance payments, applying for financial assistance, protecting credit ratings and arranging for mortgage forbearance and loss mitigation. The presenters will explain how older adults can get assistance from legal aid and other disaster legal assistance organizations.

Presenters:

  • Alys Cohen, National Consumer Law Center
  • Kathy Grunewald, Legal Services of North Florida
