    Need 4 Volunteers.

    Friends of NYLAG,

NYLAG routinely offers one-day legal clinics in the community to address urgent and other large-scale needs. Participants undergo training in the legal issues addressed in the clinic and are supervised by NYLAG staff attorneys. NYLAG has several different one-day legal clinic volunteer opportunities available. Pro bono attorneys, law grads and law students are welcome to participate.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in joining us at one or more of these clinics. Due to space limitations, we can only accommodate the indicated number of volunteers at each site, so we cannot accept everyone who might be interested in participating on a given day.

** To sign up for one or more of the One-Day Legal Clinics, please fill out this form. You may contact me for questions, but the only way to sign up for the clinics is via the online form.

Due to the high volume of interested volunteers, please note it may take 2-3 business days to respond to your request to volunteer. Please wait for confirmation before making plans to go to a site.

Mobile Legal Help Center Volunteer Opportunities

The Mobile Legal Help Center (MLHC) is the country’s first-ever legal services office and courtroom on wheels. On the MLHC, NYLAG staff provide counseling, advice, and direct representation on a variety of legal issues—from public benefits, family and matrimonial law, employment law, immigration and more—without leaving the vehicle. A video link with the courts enables access to judges for emergency hearings, including domestic violence and eviction cases.

NYLAG staff will be conducting legal clinics aboard the MLHC on the dates listed below. We invite participation from volunteer attorneys, law graduates and law students to help us provide legal services. Volunteers conduct intake interviews with MLHC visitors, and provide information and brief advice on a variety of legal issues. All volunteers are supervised by a NYLAG staff attorney who assists with evaluation of the legal issues raised during intake, and provides any guidance and support volunteers may need. Volunteers will have access to a recording of a webinar training on the MLHC intake process and will be sent training materials and intake guides.

MODUS -eDiscovery Best Practices You Probably Don't Know

    https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1451539345035374596

Just like you probably don’t know your grandma’s secret cookie recipe, there may be parts of eDiscovery that seem mysterious. At our upcoming webinar, we aim to dispel those mysteries and teach you eDiscovery Best Practices You Probably Don’t Know: An Inside Look at How to Successfully Navigate the Process Every Single Time.

We are pleased to host another free webinar event with moderator Ari Kaplan on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

    Register now

Ari’s annual E-Discovery Unfiltered research report reveals how the market perceives leading vendors, where law firms and corporate legal departments are investing, and what matters most to them in the litigation process, among other issues. While some legal teams are acutely aware of every nuance of electronic discovery, as the technology evolves, the complexity grows. As a result, it is critical for new and savvy teams to routinely assess and reevaluate their protocols to ensure that they are leveraging best-of-breed tools, maximizing efficiency, and minimizing risk. Join our panel of experts, who will be sharing strategies, success stories, pitfalls, and perspectives to help you formulate a road map that you can use to take your e-discovery into the New Year.

    Attendees will learn how to:

    1.    Regularly reassess your staffing and talent.

    2.    Cultivate executive relationships to ensure management support of new initiatives.

    3.    Routinely re-evaluate technology.

    4.    Closely collaborate with a cross-disciplinary team either in-house or at a law firm.

    5.    Reduce risk and enhance efficiency.

Supreme Court Recap: Federal Court Access Decisions from an Eight-Member SCOTUS

The 2015 Supreme Court Term was unusual because of Justice Scalia’s unexpected death and his still-vacant seat on the Court. How did this eight-member Court rule on issues affecting access to the federal courts?

Join our next Advocacy Exchange, our live monthly video broadcast with advocates advancing change. We’ll talk with Gill Deford of the Center for Medicare Advocacy, Jane Perkins of the National Health Law Program, Gary Smith of Legal Services of Northern California, and Mona Tawatao of the Western Center on Law and Poverty to get their annual recap of the previous Supreme Court Term and its implications for access to the federal courts.

And be sure to read their forthcoming article, The Supreme Court’s 2015 Term: Access Decisions from an Eight-Member Court, available on the Clearinghouse Community in early December.

Within the context of pro bono representation, using “all-new” hypotheticals as the basis for discussion, an expert faculty will review these common ethical concerns:

    Who is the client?

Confidentiality, conflicts of interest and privilege

Limited scope representation: how it works for firm and in-house counsel

    Representing clients with diminished capacity

This program will be very helpful to all attorneys working in nonprofit organizations and legal services organizations, as well as those involved in pro bono representation in law firms and corporate legal departments.

As part of PLI’s commitment to the public service and pro bono activities of the legal community, there is no fee to attend this program or view the Webcast.

    Live Webcast, December 16, 2016

    Why You Should Attend

Unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America have continued to come to California in large numbers over the past few years.  Some of these children have experienced trafficking on their journey to the United States or upon their arrival in California, and others have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by their parents. Many of these children are placed in adversarial removal proceedings. But whether in removal proceedings or not, they cannot navigate the confusing and complex immigration system alone.  Attorneys who work with immigrant youth, or pro bono attorneys interested in working on these issues, can learn critical updates about Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, identifying and advocating for youth who have been trafficked, and a new California confidentiality law and what impact it may have on these cases. This training is designed to complement our December 2014 two-day session on representing unaccompanied children in California, providing updates as well as new topics.

    What You Will Learn

Important updates on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), including limits on the number of available SIJS visas Nuts and bolts of SIJS cases in California probate court proceedings (seeking guardianship) Nuts and bolts of SIJS cases in California family court proceedings (seeking custody)

How to identify children who have survived trafficking and may be eligible for T visas

How to comply with California confidentiality laws when submitting immigration applications to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

    Who Should Attend

Attorneys interested in assisting or representing immigrant youth, firm pro bono coordinators and partners, law clinic students and faculty, public interest and non-profit organization attorneys and staff, immigration advocates, and other providers working with immigrant youth—particularly those who have already viewed our December 2014 training,  Representing Unaccompanied Children in California – Best Practices & Key Avenues for Relief from Deportation: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and Asylum.  For those who need a refresher or are new to this area of law, the 2014 program is available to view for free on the PLI website and will provide a foundation before attending the new updated program for 2016.
