NYC BAR ASSOCIATION FREE EVENT - "Beyond the Wall: Women and Children Refugees: A Central American Crisis"

Beyond the Wall: Women and Children Refugees: A Central American Crisis

    Tuesday, May 31, 2016 | 6-8:30 PM

Program Fee: City Bar Members: Free | Non-Member: $10

Co- Sponsored By: Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, International Women’s Rights Committee, Fordham University School of Law Feerick Center for Social Justice, and Public Health Association of New York

    Description:

In October 2015, UNHCR published a study, Women on the Run , that profiles the global refugee crisis as one of epic proportions. The report particularly identifies the perils facing women and children “fleeing epidemic levels of violence, including gender-based violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras”, a region referred to as the Northern Triangle Region of Central America. The Central American Refugee Crisis is unique in complexity and often overshadowed by coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis. As the only viable response, UNHCR urges a “comprehensive regional approach based on cooperation, responsibility-sharing, and solidarity among all countries affected, to ensure that people in need of protection can have access to it.” What has been the multi-disciplined response in the United States and elsewhere to help these most vulnerable persons seeking refuge? Does it measure up to the UNHCR standard?

ACEDS - Advanced eDiscovery in Office 365

    http://www.aceds.org/advanced-ediscovery-in-office-365/

In December 2015, Microsoft introduced powerful “advanced” eDiscovery tools in Office 365, building and expanding upon the “standard” eDiscovery features available for several years. Today, organizations who have adopted Office 365 can leverage advanced eDiscovery analytics such as predictive coding, near-duping, and email threading much earlier in the typical EDRM workflow when responding to litigation and investigations.

Join Jon Lavinder, Director of Technology Assisted Review at DTI, and John Collins, Director of Information Governance & Office 365 Consulting at DTI, as they review the full spectrum of eDiscovery features currently available in Office 365, with an emphasis on the Advanced eDiscovery tool set.

    Topics will include:

    ·        Review of “standard” eDiscovery features in Office 365 (identification, preservation, collection, and “preview”)

    ·        Overview of advanced eDiscovery tools available in the market

    ·        Background on Microsoft’s Equivio, the technology powering Office 365 advanced eDiscovery

    ·        Review of Office 365’s advanced eDiscovery tools, including:

    o Email threading

    o Near-duplicate detection

    o Predictive coding

Microsoft has recently been marketing and promoting their “E5” license for Office 365 which includes the Advanced eDiscovery tool set. Learn from experts exactly where and how Advanced eDiscovery fits into the bigger picture—and how you can leverage this powerful technology.

Life Preservers Project and Women in eDiscovery are excited to bring you a night of Fashion, Art and of course CHARITY!

    Tuesday, June 21, 2016 from 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Life Preservers Project and Women in eDiscovery are excited to bring you a night of Fashion, Art and of course CHARITY!  The evening's event will help raise funds for GEMS-Girls and Operation Backpack.  Life Preservers has supported Girls Educational and Mentoring Services for 7 years. GEMS mission is to empower girls and young women, ages 12–24, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking to exit the commercial sex industry and develop to their full potential. GEMS is committed to ending commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking of children by changing individual lives, transforming public perception, and revolutionizing the systems and policies that impact sexually exploited youth. In 2014, the New York City Chapter of Women in eDiscovery began its support of Operation Backpack. Each year since 2001, Volunteers of America-Greater New York has been distributing new backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies to homeless children throughout New York City. A filled backpack relieves parents of a financial burden and provides a sense of normalcy to the otherwise chaotic lives of these children, helping them to look and feel more like their classmates. Most importantly, a filled backpack allows these children to start the school year feeling prepared and confident, with the knowledge that their education is important and that someone believes in them.
